Milestone for the energy revolution: Terra One plans gigawatt-scale battery storage
A recent report by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ) dated September 19, 2025, highlights Terra One's ambitious growth path. Founded in 2022, the Berlin-based start-up has secured significant financing: Aviva Investors is providing 150 million euros of mezzanine capital.
Together with own funds and further project financing, Terra One plans to invest up to 750 million euros in German battery storage systems. The goal is a total capacity of around three gigawatt hours — an order of magnitude that corresponds to the current total installed capacity of large battery storage systems in Germany.
In doing so, we not only rely on physical infrastructure, but also on technological innovation. Terra One uses a proprietary, AI-based trading platform to optimally market its own storage on the power exchange. Behind this success is a team of 55 people at our headquarters in Berlin-Kreuzberg. Here, we combine unique expertise by bringing together former employees of AI specialist OpenAI with experienced experts in grid connections and electricity trading from industry giants such as RWE and Statkraft.
The foundation for our ambitious goals was laid back in June with the groundbreaking ceremony in Ahlerstedt, where we are currently building a battery storage system with a capacity of 30 megawatt hours. But this is just the start: With over 300 secured properties across Germany, we have a strong project pipeline to massively accelerate the expansion of large-scale storage facilities.
Despite a challenging political environment, our Chief Financial Officer Thomas Antonioli stresses that large batteries are essential to keep grid costs low and ensure stability for the expansion of renewable energies. Backed by strong partners such as Aviva Investors, Proptech 1 Ventures and 468 Capital, Terra One is ideally positioned to become one of Europe's largest storage operators.
